This 7-day Mount Kenya traverse is the most relaxed and best-acclimatised way to reach Point Lenana (4,985m). Ascending the scenic Sirimon Route with extra rest and acclimatisation days, then descending the Naro Moru Route, it gives your body the time it needs at altitude — maximising both your summit success and your enjoyment of Mount Kenya’s spectacular high-altitude scenery.

Your 7-day Sirimon & Naro Moru itinerary

DAY 1

Nairobi to Sirimon Gate & Old Moses Camp (3,300m)

Drive from Nairobi to the Sirimon Gate and trek through forest to Old Moses Camp (3,300m). Dinner and overnight.

DAY 2

Old Moses to Shipton’s Camp (4,200m)

Trek up the beautiful Mackinder’s Valley to Shipton’s Camp (4,200m) beneath the peaks.

DAY 3

Acclimatisation day at Shipton’s Camp

A day of short acclimatisation walks around Shipton’s, such as towards the Hausberg Col or the tarns, to help your body adjust. All meals and overnight.

DAY 4

Summit Point Lenana (4,985m) & descend to Mackinder’s Camp

A pre-dawn ascent to Point Lenana (4,985m) for sunrise, then cross to the Naro Moru side and descend to Mackinder’s Camp (4,200m).

DAY 5

Rest & short walks at Mackinder’s Camp

A gentler day recovering after the summit, with optional short walks in the Teleki Valley. All meals and overnight.

DAY 6

Descend to the Met Station (3,050m)

Descend across the moorland and the “vertical bog” to the Met Station (3,050m). Dinner and overnight.

DAY 7

Descend to Naro Moru Gate & return to Nairobi

Final trek through the forest to the Naro Moru Gate, then drive back to Nairobi.

Mount Kenya rises to 5,199m at Batian, its highest peak. Our treks target Point Lenana at 4,985m — the third-highest peak and the goal for trekkers. The higher peaks of Batian and Nelion require technical rock climbing.

Is a 7-day climb better than a shorter one?

Yes — more days means more time to acclimatise, which significantly improves your summit success and reduces the risk of altitude sickness. This itinerary is ideal if you want the most comfortable, safest ascent of Mount Kenya.

When is the best time to climb Mount Kenya?

The driest, clearest conditions are from January to March and June to October. These are the most popular months, though the mountain can be climbed year-round.
